At Lambs Lane we aim to deliver DT lessons where the children are encouraged to use creativity and imagination to design and make appealing and purposeful products that solve real and relevant problems, considering their own and others’ needs, wants and values. Addressing the cooking and nutrition strand of the DT curriculum, we believe it is vital for our children to understand and apply the principles of nutrition and learn how to cook a range of dishes and develop a love of cookery. While learning about cooking, they develop an understanding of hygiene and how to keep themselves safe in the kitchen.
Our DT curriculum is divided into three areas:
• designing, planning and communicating
• evaluating processes and products
Within these areas, pupils learn how to take risks, becoming resourceful, innovative, enterprising and capable citizens. Through the evaluation of past and present design and technology, they develop a critical understanding of its impact on daily life and the wider world. Pupils draw on their mathematical, artistic and scientific skills to design and make and then critique their work and evaluate. Children are offered the chance throughout a unit of work to ‘tinker’ and modify their product to ensure the best possible outcomes.
